Giving one back
Bad news from the bathroom scale, I’m afraid. This week’s weigh-in, taken on Monday, put me at 162 pounds. That’s one more than the previous week. The office kitchen hasn’t helped; neither have some ridiculous work-week lunches, pizza-and-movie nights, Manhattans & Martinis, good wine, etc. And I’m not altogether sure I’ve righted the pattern this week. It’s been an enjoyable run, but has brought with it some predictable consequences. So how do I evaluate the trade-offs? I’m leaning toward re-invigorated discipline. After all, I know where this particular road leads — and it goes there in a hurry.
P.S. Besides the 1.4 million residents of The Bronx, am I the only person in America dejected by the Red Sox victory?
Well, do you have a reason to be dejected by the Red Sox victory? Perhaps by sharing it you could deject others.

After watching the Yankees defeat my hometown Rangers and my adopted Mets, it was a sweet moment of underdog justice when I saw the Sox slam the Yankees. But I understand Matt’s reaction… how can being up by three games possibly go wrong? That was to be quite a devastating experience. Welcome to life as a Rangers fan.

I’m perhaps more dejected by a World Series victory being front-page news. It’s lovely and all to win a ball game, but surely there are things of greater import to which to devote processed tree carcasses. New opera productions, for instance. My curmudgeounly approach is only exacerbated when NYC traffic reports are superseded by interminable live broadcasts from Yankees Stadium.

Don’t do it, Matt, don’t do it! Cave in! Indulge! Eat, drink, and be merry. Then drink some more!

Did you know that Trader Joe’s carries chocolate, vanilla, and tiramisu gelato imported from Italy?
